Later on it’s apparent that this is the reason they thought I was leaving them, combined with my attraction to men. I like women, too, but I’m overall attracted to masculinity (ie butch women, muscle women, lumberjack or butler types, etc) so calling a girl “cute” is like… well, a friendly “you’re very cute!” This was after we broke up, by the way, they were policing who I found attractive while also letting themselves find other people attractive and just go to fucking bonetown. A quote I found was “[y] said she wished there was a way I wouldn’t have to know” because I said I didn’t want to know they were having sex.
