A God’s “Mistake”?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It actually took me a solid week of reading to catch up to the current update (we’re in season 5) and I LOVE this series. It’s so funny and so thoughtful that I was knee-deep in absolute adoration for the story and characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

good god sirs this is the picture of a healthy and lovely relationship. there is a loving and respectful angle to how the leads treat each other, where communication is open and expected. from the very beginning, the characters are up front about their troubles and the boundaries that they have, which are duly noted and respected by the other party. it encourages the other to not just lean on the other, but to gain confidence in themself. and it’s cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the evil ex serves as the perfect foil for the main relationship, where he causes such terrible trauma with his past manipulations and control of the female lead that it devastates her ability to be present in her relationship with her new husband. of course, him in the past is the foil\u2014 he becomes a caricature of himself in the current timeline but his influence becomes smaller and smaller because of the main relationship’s overall healthy and blossoming aura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

rely on others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

this webtoon talks a lot at first about “being the protagonist”. “because i am the protagonist, i must do this.” the female lead’s entire second life was spent being the protagonist, even at the cost of herself. she herself admits that she hated it and would much prefer being a side character, but did only what she thought she had to do to survive. in her third life, she decided to pursue the side character life and elevate others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

still, she knew she had the “protagonist” role to fulfill despite growing weaker. except through being forced to deal with this newfound weakness, she was unable to fully rely on herself and had to lean on other people. people who were willing to be there for her. they showed her that she didn’t have to take on the world by herself. not one person in the entire webtoon has to take the whole story onto their shoulders, and anyone who tries is shaken out of it and given a dose of love and tenderness and empathy to really show them that it’s not a healthy way to do things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it literally burns you out. leaves you weak. until you have no choice but to rely on others. as it happened to the female lead. she learned her lesson, and she learned it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

no threads left loose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

there is not a single loose thread left to tug in this series. every question gets a dogged pursuit by the author and i LOVE that. the characters don’t go around making more questions for themselves either: they pursue the answers and try to resolve them reasonably, communicating it to each other and the audience clearly and with little wiggle room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it’s fascinating that even the littlest things have answers (“how did you get my ring size?!” (character references exact panel it was done) “right here honey!”) and the biggest things have answers that match their complexity but are still explained with clarity and detail that leaves no confusion for the audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

even adding the NEW mystery in, which is to say, how tf is there a book with a completely different timeline written in another universe that got to the female lead, it’s being reasonably pursued. knowledge is shared and passed around, and even though they are not sharing that with the female lead, they are being careful not to play keep away but more like… keep her from figuring out anything before they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

three lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

the female lead has lived three lives and fully acknowledges that it affects her perspective of everything. she has been an office worker in korea. the true hero and protagonist in the story. and then she has been the side character living her best life with her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

she acknowledges that she is over one hundred years old and that it will make her stubborn at times, but extremely creative and strange in other ways. she views others as being younger than her, even her parents, who in her second life viewed her with a sort of fear at her capacity for language and learning as she conducted herself like a grown woman even as a baby. her being older than everyone else and having lived so long with these repeated life experiences skewed her severely in some ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

she also has grown to be extremely practical and strong-willed, but is still deeply human. she can still be as affected by things as anyone else is. she can understand when she is out of her depth and find those who will make up for her shortcomings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one of my favorite things? she does not keep her three lives a top secret. there’s even a joke where they literally made pamphlets<\/em> about her reincarnation when it required explaining because they had to explain it so often. the close friends and colleagues who understand that she is a reincarnation from another world are able to understand her unique situation better for it. it’s not just shrugged off. people know what happened to her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

i just like it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

and may i say, this is just an extremely good comic. it went out of its way to do something different and did it well. the male lead is a different sort of beau\u2014 a bearded man is NOT something you see at all in the male lead sphere of webtoons. it’s usually a youthful lad with a clean shaven face, scarred lightly if at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pellus, meanwhile, is a road map of scars and has a goatee. his hair is often a bit messy, growing long by the end of the fourth act. he’s described as a bear often. it’s great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

not only that, but i would call it a bit of a tropesmasher. it does point directly at certain tropes and go, no, we’re not doing that at times (dreams where information is omitted? we should wait to see the whole picture, because this could have been skewed to change our perception!). it loves to have traditionally masculine roles go to women. pellus’ personal journey is not about how deeply he can fall in love with his wife, but how he can love himself because of the help his wife offers. lithera’s journey is learning to love again, and learning that she can love openly and honestly without fear. neither of the leads treat each other like the center of the universe, even though without question they are the center of the universe for one another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

it’s utterly sweet. it’s so wonderful. it’s so fucking funny. it’s adorable. it has a great level of catharsis. it’s fantastic.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
