It’s the Goblin Slayer who comes to their rescue–a man who’s dedicated his life to the extermination of all goblins, by any means necessary. I at first picked the series up out of spite, as my ex-wife claimed “it promotes genocide” without actually knowing the content at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike a lot of dark fantasy seinen manga, it does not delight in the showiness of the torture. It’s a blunt force demonstration of the horrors of war, crime, the lowest human impulses. The very first volume shows the tragedy of inexperienced youth in their over confidence, and each death is followed by the brief light of their life before it gets snuffed out forever. It tries to hammer home, these are people, and what has been done to them is awful.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the same breath, Goblin Slayer kills a young woman in order to spare her from death by goblin poison. He does it without hesitation\u2014 and with the idea that with one less potential hostage, he could stop the goblins from reproducing using her body. It demonstrates the twisted nature of the main character in his single-minded desire for revenge. Goblin Slayer says himself, “I am to goblins what they are to us.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think of it as an allegory for human violence that takes advantage of a TTRPG-like setting where all the characters are essentially NPCs in the background of a larger story. No character has a name, but a short epithet that is their entire identity. The main character is Goblin Slayer. His childhood friend is dubbed Cow Girl. Priestess is the other main character. Even people who feel like they should have names are only referred to by their role. They are explicitly nameless characters set in the background of the main story, where somewhere, heroes are taking on demons and generals and the gods are fighting their wars with all their little pawns on the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goblin Slayer describes the collateral damage of war, violence, and the idea that “someone else will take care of it”. It does not glorify war, but focuses on the brutality, the small losses that are inevitable if people ignore the banal side quests. One person takes it upon himself to clean up everything, and it royally fucks him up. Everyone both looks to this man to do the job and detests him for doing the job. He is a representation of the creatures people will become working themselves to death in their single-minded pursuit. He is not necessarily a hero by choice, and actively denies the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

goblins as the bad guys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We are all very aware of goblins as caricatures of Jewish folks (hence my ex-wife’s “it promotes genocide”). However, I’d also like to point out that traditional Tolkien-esque fantasy has now relegated the goblin to another role: two-bit baddies that are a step above giant rats and slimes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’re a generic monster race that occupies a level of disdain in adventure stories, and so common now that they are inspiring subversions of the trope of goblins being trash-tier nothings. Of course Goblin Slayer<\/em> is an example of the dark extreme of this, but on the flip side you have That Time I Reincarnated As a Slime<\/a><\/em> and So What’s Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t think Goblin Slayer<\/em> would be the same without the goblins functioning as the living allegory of all that is wrong with humanity. If it was war games, we would have to focus on politics, civil rights, and the actual human price of war. Reading the manga, you’ll notice that the presence of evil and horror is fairly limited to Goblin Slayer’s perspective: it all comes from the goblins, and therefore they must be exterminated. They serve as a device to further Goblin Slayer’s path of vengeance, and the never-ending onslaught is like Batman in Gotham. It never ends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goblins evolving in tactics and pushing Goblin Slayer to evolve with them is also a key aspect. It’s briefly mentioned that most of the time, goblins are just thieves in the night, stealing for sustenance and taking advantage of what they can in order to reproduce or gain power. With their slow evolution\u2014 implied to be hastened by the God of Knowledge\u2014 we see Goblin Slayer evolve not just as a killer, but as a human being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has no identity. His entire identity is killing goblins. Goblins, which have little to no value in the greater world, reduce his value as a human being. But because of his focus on the little things, it makes him develop as well. He and the goblins are vastly different, and yet the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

women<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aaaah… women in dark fantasy have it rough. Always, always, when a writer, especially male, imagines “what is the worst thing you can do to someone?” there is a gender gap. For women, it’s rape and forced pregnancy. For men, it’s, aaaah. Kill them creatively I guess!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series has a darkly sexual charge to it as part of the brutal nature of the series. Women, no matter how skilled, are also vulnerable in key ways… namely, being women. It’s not a great thing to read all the time, but you see it everywhere. Witcher.<\/em> Game of Thrones.<\/em> Etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While women in this series can be powerful, this vulnerability (and in most of them, combined with trauma) means abject fear is always present when dealing with goblins. The constant fear of being brutalized hangs over them constantly, and while I would like to say “it reflects real-world terror in the face of men”, it does feel gratuitous at times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series tries its best to make women into proper characters, and I feel that it mostly succeeds… but beware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the tabletop gaming aspect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My guys this is D&D. I’ve briefly read bits and bobs of the Year One series, which goes into a tish more detail, but it’s explicitly a game board for a TTRPG. The religion is based on dice, there are references to this being a “four-cornered world”, monster manuals are a thing, inspiration is handed out, long rests and short rests are key, spell slot conservation is notable… there are beholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes Goblin Slayer special in this world is that he “doesn’t allow anyone to roll the dice for him”. He takes no chances and everything is calculated and meticulously planned out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can see this being a game with a particularly sadistic DM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
