The story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.
I’m a big fan of the Fallout franchise, despite its many flaws.
We went to a concert and one of the band members got excited when he saw my Fallout T-shirt (with the band name screen printed over it) and we talked about it and now I’ve managed to bully Karen and Josh into watching this.
I really enjoyed watching it, and to my delight, Karen and Josh also loved it despite knowing nothing about the Fallout universe. This is very much something that is made for and by fans. It really captures the strange horror/action/comedy angle that the Fallout series typically has. Sometimes things are a bit jarring (the “You wanna have sex?” scene, what the fuck? Lucy sometimes just does that…) but other times you stand up and go “YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT’S DOGMEAT! IT’S DOGMEAT!”
I find it really funny that Fallout’s anticapitalist/anti-war message persisted strongly despite being produced by Amazon Prime. On the one hand, the evolution of Fallout slips and slides with the commentary (it has since Bethesda took over, tbh) but I still really enjoyed this.
Like. Okay. Here’s a major thing for me: Aspirant Dane exists. Nonbinary character introduced without actually pointing and shouting that they are nonbinary. They’re very clearly GNC! And I love them!
And then they deprogrammed Maximus and I hated him at first and then I was like, wait, fuck, he’s funny and he’s learning!
And the Ghoul exists. (He looks better after being absolutely fucked up). He’s the rat man we love. Nasty piece of shit but in a dark hero way.
And then Norm? I really like his whole arc. Stupid sympathetic for this kid struggling against a system that is built to resist questioning.
