(lovely poster variant made by Becky Cloonan)
In 1630, a farmer relocates his family to a remote plot of land on the edge of a forest where strange, unsettling things happen. With suspicion and paranoia mounting, each family member’s faith, loyalty and love are tested in shocking ways.
Karen has been wondering about the Witch (VVitch) for some time, and we three decided to sit and watch it during a hang-out night.
As she put it, “It’s not really a horror movie… it’s more of a suspense/thriller.” Which, yeah, it doesn’t have the horror that people are used to. It’s a character-driven horror that thrives on discord between family members as evil slowly worms its way in.
This wasn’t the first time I watched it, but you know, I enjoyed it more this time. Everything seemed more interesting this time around. My buds and I are big on chatter during movies, swapping facts, theories, and quips such as: witches use this ointment to apply to their broomsticks to fly; it was not scripted for Black Phillip to shove William around; the corn was maybe filled with hallucinogenic mold; the boy hit puberty like a freight train; etc.
My favorite character? Black Philip.
Showing my ass here, but hearing the gloves creak is the highlight of the entire encounter.
