I find it funny that this movie came out in 2016, when Trump won the office for his first term. Like the other Purge film I talked about, the symbolism is in-your-face, criticizing the current government and begging people to trust the system and using their vote to change things rather than taking direct action. Literally, Senator Roan begs people not to kill the Big Bad in order to avoid him becoming a martyr for the opposing ideologies.
All the things I said before about Purge: Anarchy still remain true. It is screaming for people to understand where it’s coming from. The evil people are literally White Power Nazis and crusty white men sitting in a room, organizing an assassination saying that the ends justify the means. Nearly everyone who is good and helpful are PoC who have been trying to be part of the community and help one another even outside of the Purge.
The MVP of the whole movie is Joe Dixon, who literally sacrifices himself to protect his beliefs and leaves behind his bodega to his partner, a Mexican immigrant who believes in the American dream.
The movie is begging people to vote and make a difference by connecting with their community. “Fight for what is right! The alternative is bloodshed and terror and the purging of real American culture!”
