In a post-apocalyptic future after “The Quiet Rapture” event, a convict explores a blood ocean on a desolate moon using a submarine called the “Iron Lung” to search for missing stars/planets.
My bud invited me to go see it with her and so we packed into the car and drove about an hour to the only movie theater around us that was showing it. Not knowing anything about the game it was based on, we were unprepared for, well, literally any of it.
It was weird to watch in a theatre full of presumably big Markiplier fans.
Afterwards, we chatted about all the different interpretations and symbolism we could get out of it. Radiation and the poisoning of the environment for humans. Religion and getting out of it. The sacrifice of humans on the altar of progress.
My angle was the religious one, seeing as we ended up dealing with eldritch gods and the religion/extremist beliefs of Simon, Markiplier’s character. My interpretation was based on his finding the symbol and the way it mirrored the porthole, where the god would eventually come through and see him.
It’s a claustrophobic horror movie, taking place entirely in the Iron Lung and often using close-up shots to increase the sensation. It takes care not to make the constant navigation scenes boring. Right now I’m watching Markiplier’s Iron Lung playthrough to get… more context.
