The amount of psychic damage I took from this series should b illegal. It’s so heartfelt, so intense at times, that I would put down the series and walk away. I cried at the end for Sachi and Mister.
The first few chapters gives the reader a strong impression of this being a kidnapping yandere romance: it is not. It is really not. And it’s just two people learning how to connect. Not like lovers, almost like friends, more like family.
Watching Sachi struggle with herself, her trauma after escaping, cuts deep. Watching her behave erratically because she’s trying to rationalize everything and fight for her place in the world once she has some form of safety… gods, it’s recognizable.
And Mister. He knows what he is. He hates what he is. And he struggles with the fact that he’s alive and pushing to make it in the world.
It’s a story about how the system fails people, and how society looks down on people who have fallen and need help to get back up. People who are outside of the norm, people who are in invisible situations, people who are the downtrodden and don’t get a fair shake… it’s a grim reminder that people fall through the cracks, and only through people’s ability to reach out can anyone be “saved”.
