Autobiographical essay manga from Kabi Nagata surrounding her struggles with her eating disorder and binge-eating.
Nagata Kabi-sensei, please… I worry so much.
Every time she comes out with a new book about her self-destructive behavior, I wonder about her progress. Sometimes she ends on sad notes. Happy notes. Self-analyzes. It’s a shock and sometimes it’s so unbearably relatable that my empathy shoots through the roof.
This one, as the title implies, explores her eating disorder. Binging and purging is a tough topic, and she talks about the details without going into treatment. It’s a look at the life of it, and a small peek into the way doctors are trying to intercept and decrease potential harm done to her body.
She talks about her food peculiarities and… I often wonder if her food peculiarities are from more than just disordered eating. Her mental illness has been spoken of before, and as someone with my own peculiarities (crunch must graze the top of my mouth, chewing with my tongue, nothing can be thick and smooth or I get sick, etc) it just. Hrm.
In any case, I do recommend this book, but I would advise those with ED to be wary as it could likely trigger something again if you’re not ready. On the other hand, it’s a perspective that I haven’t seen in books yet, so it could be helpful to see someone in this position trying to deal with it.
