Ichinoi, a 75-year-old woman living a peaceful life, unwittingly buys a Boy’s Love manga one day…and is fascinated by what she finds inside. When she returns to the bookstore to buy the next volume, the high school girl working there–Urara, a seasoned BL fan–notices a budding fangirl when she sees one. When Urara offers to help Ichinoi explore this whole new world of fiction, the two dive into BL fandom together, and form an unlikely friendship along the way.

This is a heartfelt series about someone coming into her own and leaving the comfort of her established life and jumping into a new one because of the inspiration that fandom and new bonds gives them. works both ways.

i thought a lot about what to say about this series and i just kept thinking about how being passionate about something changes someone for the better, even if it scares them to love something deeply. it shows there’s a community for it, even if it’s seen as unlikely, and people will cherish you for loving something thoroughly and happily. it’ll bridge bonds across a generation gap if need be.

and man, it’s so very true. you know what loving things has brought me? very real friendships. i love what i love very much and people know very well the things that i adore and so they are happy to watch and support me in my passions. how awesome is that? bonding over loved things?

it delves into growth an change and uncertainty. the uncertainty of an established artist against the uncertainty of a new artist. the inspiration someone new could have for someone with experience and vice versa. how people can inspire one another simply by being there and putting their energy into the world. by being who they are. by supporting other people. by being kind. it’s lovely.

Welcome to the Menagerie.

Here is where M logs their media activity. Partly because Goodreads is forgettable and keeping physical logs is harder. Sometimes M writes a lot. Sometimes M doesn’t write enough. It doesn’t matter. This is just a for-fun little blog so that M can remember what they thought about whatever they watched or read or played or. Whatever.

What is M?

I read. Voraciously. I have subscriptions to those book things on digital retailers. I consume books at nearly all hours. The hours I don’t spend reading? I’m writing. I’m drawing. I have a problem. I have a problem in that I love to read things that are in the same vein repeatedly. Book journals don’t work and as much as I text my friends screenshots of book passages, it doesn’t scratch the itch. Now I’m going to be doing… tiny… tiny book reports.
