Here’s a list of tropes I’m adding because of this season:
- Femboy Found
- Catboy
- CatMAN
- Pervert Joke Character
- Musical Sequences
Granted some of these would have been fine to add before but it just hit me like a truck this time.
This season we get to see more of the class— when Iruma has his evil cycle, he puts them purposefully into the spotlight. You learn more and get a bit more attached. They hammer in everyone’s abilities and makes it clear that Iruma has been paying attention to everyone’s abilities and knows how to use them.
I think the best part of his evil cycle, though, is that he’s still basically the same guy. He knows and understands the nature of demons and he knows just how best to manipulate people… but he’s also kind and caring even if he’s more blunt and selfish.
Kalego-sensei has always been there for the ladies to gawk at, and now I wonder if it was purposefully made fairly equal in terms of catering. You have your girls with the boobs and such but it’s so natural that you just. Okay! The eye candy for boys is there and then you have…
There’s eye candy for everyone… and they don’t shy away from femininity. Ameri’s storyline this season is her learning to embrace her brand of feminine charm. The season, after all, kicks off with her losing that cool distance she maintains and taking away the powerful desire she holds. She becomes gentle and demure, unable to fight, and although her weakness is looked down upon, she finds acceptance. Not only that, but she remembers herself. She’s not there just to impress Iruma. She has her own ambitions! Iruma is just a small part of what she wants!
Her fusing these desires makes her stronger. Literally.
And then we have the appearance of Alikred… or Ali-san.
It is absolutely not lost on me that Ali-san’s name backwards is Derkila.
Derkila, the mysterious missing demon king…
Anyway, I love Ali-san’s antics. I thought I would dislike them, but they’re so much fun. Ali-san is basically a secret mentor for Iruma and helps make sure Iruma can fit into demon society. Ali-san also has a huge fondness for playing with his form, which though he’s presenting masculine by default, he often flips to a feminine presentation to drive his point home. Makes you think about that request for curves in the beginning…
We do have the fluffy-fluffy problem in the very beginning, but it sort of fades away…?
The budget has evidently grown for this season, as there’s plenty of times when the effects and smoothness of animation are awesome. It hits a lot more shounen elements this time around as well, with the cool fighting sequences and such…
We have fun here. Very good.
Last point here. I’m not putting this in the disability field, but I often think that there’s a bit of an allegory for disability here. The world is literally not made for Iruma. He doesn’t have those parts of him that make him demonic, and he doesn’t have the same abilities that others do. Despite this, he’s well-loved, happier than ever, and he works hard to overcome the distance between himself and others. There’s some things he literally can’t do— I mean, season one is literally a flying course. He has to participate in classes not made for him, learn how to function in a world that he doesn’t entirely understand, and yet the weird differences between him and the rest don’t matter. The people around him are supportive and willing to work to help him. They celebrate what he can do and when he falls short, they help him keep up. No one questions that he uses an aid, no one laughs at him because he doesn’t know things that is “common knowledge”, and anyone who looks down on him learns their god damn lesson.
I’m really looking forward to watching season 3 now.
