I read up to the Battler Party arc but fell off the wagon (this is a common theme, isn’t it?) and so picked up the anime.
First off: ear worm opening.
It’s funny and very anime. “Why do you keep saying that?” Because there are times when anime is anime and this is very anime, okay? It’s the line between “it’s okay if someone else walks into the room” and “I’m embarrassed to share with anyone who doesn’t normally watch anime”. Not as if there’s a lot of ecchi moments— there’s brief fan service when the Succubi are shown, but that’s fairly rare.
Clara’s family has a bit where they sing together all the time, always using the same melody for each one.
During the Battler Party arc, Karen happened to come in to see Amy interacting with Iruma and immediately asked if they were going to kiss. On the one hand, dude. They totally should. The entire show has an undercurrent of queerness no matter how much they deny it.
And during the end, where Kuromu-chan gets sick? The whole main crew becomes idols. Massively popular for a moment because they are actually. Good at it? I really tried to find the bit where they all sing the Little Imp song together.
I mentioned an undercurrent of queerness earlier, and here’s my case: weird boy gets sucked into a world where everything is different and on day one meets a guy who dedicates his everything to him. Iruma is the soft, gentle type; the girl most into him (Ameri) shows him her forbidden texts (shoujo manga) and he reads it with enthusiasm to her. She’s huge, a powerhouse, and takes on the typically dominating role of School Council President. She’s widely respected and beloved for her serious demeanor. And also, she pictures Iruma cross-dressing after the concert and is seriously into it. My brain screams t4t just because.
There’s also the matter of Clara. It’s not canonized, so I hesitate to put her in disability rep, but my girl is the picture of AuDHD. When she’s introduced, everyone acts like she’s too daft to realize what’s around her but she clearly does by the end of the episode. Iruma adopts her because he legitimately likes her company by the end, regardless of everything she offers him. It solidifies her place in the three main characters and I love her.
But of course I can’t claim she is/isn’t.
Anyway, the show is fun and I’m looking forward to seeing Iruma’s Evil Cycle in season 2.
