So I only made it through 6 episodes.
Usually when I drop anything, it’s because it’s offensively bad. This is not the case. I dropped this because… it’s not… great. It’s not bad, either. It’s mediocre. Middle of the road. It sure does exist and it sure does sit comfortably in the tropes. It doesn’t try anything new, it’s not exactly beautiful to look at, and honestly, it’s… boring.
I started watching it because I like the formula that the title directly describes. The “you’ll appreciate me when I’m gone” kind of thing is a great form of catharsis (which I’m writing about in a proper post). But the thing is, here? Within the firsts six episodes… the anime doesn’t really show much reason to miss him. They just sort of say he can fight and he can layer the one spell he knows, and then play it as amazing later.
The supposedly famous party that kicks him out don’t feel anything more than amateur. They’re evil but in a cartoon way where you wonder, “Are they this stupid and no one has ever noticed?” They act like having him made them great, but… how?
And when Laust gains recognition, it’s… what’s the word for it? Not cathartic. Not great. Just sort of… okay. Y’all knew that shit that was happening was wrong? And you just decided not to do anything because you thought the guy was stupid?
Narsena’s relationship to Laust and her power is sort of… eh. I like her better than him, at least. When she strikes, you’re like, neat! She punched fire! And then… well, I guess she might be strong, but we don’t really feel that. And when they show that Laust is strong (disregarding the “power”, honestly, I don’t care), it’s just… kind of there. He steps in and puts up his thick ass dagger. It’s not shot like it’s really anything to look at.
So.
Anyway.
I dropped it. It’s boring.
