Thirty-seven-year-old Satoru Mikami is a typical corporate worker, who is perfectly content with his monotonous lifestyle in Tokyo, other than failing to nail down a girlfriend even once throughout his life. In the midst of a casual encounter with his colleague, he falls victim to a random assailant on the streets and is stabbed. However, while succumbing to his injuries, a peculiar voice echoes in his mind, and recites a bunch of commands which the dying man cannot make sense of.

When Satoru regains consciousness, he discovers that he has reincarnated as a goop of slime in an unfamiliar realm. In doing so, he acquires newfound skills—notably, the power to devour anything and mimic its appearance and abilities. He then stumbles upon the sealed Catastrophe-level monster “Storm Dragon” Veldora who had been sealed away for the past 300 years for devastating a town to ashes. Sympathetic to his predicament, Satoru befriends him, promising to assist in destroying the seal. In return, Veldora bestows upon him the name Rimuru Tempest to grant him divine protection.

Now, liberated from the mundanities of his past life, Rimuru embarks on a fresh journey with a distinct goal in mind. As he grows accustomed to his new physique, his gooey antics ripple throughout the world, gradually altering his fate.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime was one of the first manga and light novels I’ve ever read in this strain of isekai. It precedes the otome isekai trend and in part helped kick off the trend of isekai trend we’re enjoying now (though some may disagree). I like to think it’s one of the ones that made the weakest to strongest / tensei’d into a weird thing that unexpectedly comes to hold power / etc more popular.

And now I’ve rewatched season 1 and 2 and caught up on season 3.

It’s one of those funny ones where I just sit and watch and think, “Wonder how they’re gonna fix this.” Often it’s just Rimuru getting more powerful and learning how to be a bit more ruthless. There’s a bit of fun to see the gap between a slime ball and this:

And the animation is honestly fantastic at times. I do get bored of the harem dynamics but I enjoy the actual arcs. It’s a very shounen series, lots of fan service (sometimes played for laughs when it goes for equal opportunity fan service, like in the tentacle episode, which of course my roommate walked in on me watching while everyone was suspended in the air with… tentacles…), and a lot of fighting progressively stronger foes.

I do sometimes get sad about the parts that were cut from the series as a whole, like when Beretta was made. But that’s anime life, I guess.

In any case! I enjoyed the anime. Crunchyroll has posted up the dubbed first episode on YouTube, so if you feel like giving it a watch:

(though I prefer subs. I’m that guy. I don’t like english anime voices usually.)

Welcome to the Menagerie.

Here is where M logs their media activity. Partly because Goodreads is forgettable and keeping physical logs is harder. Sometimes M writes a lot. Sometimes M doesn’t write enough. It doesn’t matter. This is just a for-fun little blog so that M can remember what they thought about whatever they watched or read or played or. Whatever.

What is M?

I read. Voraciously. I have subscriptions to those book things on digital retailers. I consume books at nearly all hours. The hours I don’t spend reading? I’m writing. I’m drawing. I have a problem. I have a problem in that I love to read things that are in the same vein repeatedly. Book journals don’t work and as much as I text my friends screenshots of book passages, it doesn’t scratch the itch. Now I’m going to be doing… tiny… tiny book reports.
