Menagerie:
Gosetsu the Hell Capybara and Lu the Baby Fenrir
On the run for crimes she did not commit, disgraced noblewoman Charlotte Evans collapses deep in the forest. A sorcerer named Allen Crawford—also known as the “Demon Lord”—finds and defends Charlotte from her pursuers. Since she has no place left to go, Allen takes pity on Charlotte and offers to hire her as a live-in maid.
Allen quickly realizes that Charlotte has faced ridicule and hatred all her life from her so-called noble family, and she has never known what true freedom feels like. He decides to teach her about all the naughty things the world has to offer and enables her to surrender to her whims and impulses. Charlotte’s sweet innocence proves an obstacle to his plans, but Allen is determined to show her the kind of life her family has denied her.
Although he despises being social, Allen begins to open himself up to Charlotte. The longer they live together, the more they discover their similarities. Though most people have abandoned them, the duo promises to stay together, oblivious to their budding feelings for each other.
I actually wasn’t sure which demographic this anime is aimed at. It’s like if shoujo and shounen manga met in the middle to make a cute romcom. It definitely leans more toward the shounen perspective with the variety of cute girls, but they also lean into the romantic aspect pretty well.
Really, I had a fun time watching this! A villainess typical start where the persecuted girl is falsely accused of a crime, has her engagement annulled, and ends up living with a super-powerful mage who only wants to spoil her? Shoujo. A super-powerful mage with all the power he will ever need using the term “naughty” to refer to all their (admittedly innocent) activities, such as eating cake for dinner or playing video games? Shounen. A gathering of cute fluffy animals who love their lady beyond all reason? Shoujo. A gathering of cute girls who match some waifu archetypes? Shounen.
It’s cute, it’s fun, it’s not the whole world but hey! It’s aight!
