🪦 DROPPED 🪦
“You’re the bride I’ve been searching for all this time.” The ayakashi and humans coexist in harmony. The ayakashi, having superior abilities and beautiful appearances, sometimes find their partner among human women, making them their “bride”. The bride, in exchange for bringing prosperity, receives absolute love from the ayakashi. Yuzu is constantly compared to her sister, a bride of a demon fox, and is resented by her family every day. One day, when Yuzu just couldn’t take things anymore, a man appears before her on a bridge. This man is the most beautiful man Yuzu has ever seen… and he’s calling her his wife?! “Just be quiet and let me hold you.” The most powerful, “cold-hearted” ayakashi is pouring his heart out for Yuzu?!
“It’s not beating the ‘it’s not creepy if he’s hot’ allegations.”
– Karen at the end of episode one
(massaging temples) We wanted to like this. It’s got budget, it’s a good looking anime, but jesus christ. Our lady lead has the personality of a wet paper towel or a piece of kelp. Everything acts on her. She exists for things to happen to her. That’s it. It pissed us off enough that she was like… nothing.
So she’s a minor in an abusive situation with no one and nothing. And then a hot dude with money and power who literally swears to love her on meeting her shows up and fixes everything, directly decides to take control of her life for her, and oh yeah, is a GROWN ASS ADULT MAN a mystery amount of years her senior… listen.
On finishing the first episode, we looked at each other and said, “We wouldn’t let a teenager watch this. It glorifies unbalanced relationships with control issues.” It is in no way shape or form the ideal, and to have the main character be a high school girl makes it even worse. The age gap is hard to excuse when she doesn’t have any control or say in her own life. She literally gets adopted by her grandparents because her new boyfriend said so in his magical “fix it” hand wave he did for her.
“How long until he makes her quit her job?”
– Me finding out she has a job in episode one.
She was forced to quit by episode 4.
“Bro is gonna have to tell people he’s picking up his girlfriend from high school.”
– watching the intro
“Leaving his high-powered job to wait at the school gates.”
“In a Ferrari.”
I only managed four episodes. Usually I love animes where a character gets beat the fuck down and in revenge she pops back up and lives a happy life to spite her haters, but this really pissed us off. Dumb ass bullshit for fuckin SERIOUS.
Demons, I have to say, are dumb fucks. This bride thing is a magical time-honored tradition but it’s soooo common, apparently? And it makes the demon dumb as a fucking rock, bending to the will of their bride even when it’s unwise? Makes them want to be controlling and possessive?
(massaging temples)
(big sigh)
It might be romantic for people who are into soaps or something. It’s got a soap opera like way about it, with very easy-going drama that is very obvious and heavy-handed. There’s no nuance to be had, so. This is what I take away from my four episodes. I give up. Thinking about going back to watch more is like taking a brillo pad to my eyes.
