After God is a surprisingly intense and emotional story, seamlessly weaving comedy and drama to get you closer to the characters before beating the absolute shit out of you with feelings. I love this series.
At first I thought it was going to be your typical shounen, with a focus on Fighting and Friendship and Cool Powers. Instead it’s primarily a character drama with a biting commentary on how society treats people, the lengths that people will go for validation and affection, and the deep anger that people experience without even realizing it.
It’s funny. It’s sad. It’s cool. I like it. There’s nothing that would stop me from recommending it to my friends who don’t really read manga too much, either. The cat mascot is fine, but there’s no fan service, the female characters are amazing, there’s no waifus or lolis or anything like that… it’s a solid story that doesn’t rely on tropes or anything to draw in people. I don’t find that it would be impenetrable to people not familiar with manga or Japanese culture, either. The few items that would be specific are explained.
